There are little things that we can do every day to stay healthy. Sometimes, despite our best efforts, we catch a cold or the flu. Antibiotics ineffective in treating viruses. However, there are some alternative methods that we can use to relieve the symptoms of cold and flu. The following six:

The old standbys. Chicken soup has been proven over the years to alleviate the symptoms of the flu. Garlic contains substances immune boosting. Recent studies have shown that garlic may also reduce pain. Add bulb garlic, onion or leek and celery for your chickens, when making chicken broth. Freeze them and keep them on hand for use when symptoms of cold or flu.

Echinacea. While no longer preferred herb echinacea to prevent colds and flu, studies have shown that, if taken at the beginning of the cold or flu, Echinacea can be helpful in reducing symptoms.

Vitamin c current studies show no evidence that vitamin c, taken in large doses, can ward off a cold. However, a supplement of vitamin c can reduce the amount of time you have a cold. There is no need to take large doses of vitamin c will just wash out the extra amount from your system.

Andrographis. While relatively new in the United States, showed Andrographis to help prevent or reduce the symptoms of the cold. Is believed to stimulate the immune system. It contains qualities that may be useful in reducing a fever without causing stomach upset.

Elderberries. Elderberry as a source of medicine, can be traced back to the time of Hippocrates. Tests have shown that elderberries suppress growth of influenza. Patients who have been tested on elderberry extract recovered faster than those on the placebo. This little Berry has received much attention, until now, and now one of my favorite ways to treat the symptoms of cold and flu naturally.

Astragalus. This is sometimes called “nature of antibiotics. Have been used for more than two thousand years in China. This herb is believed to fight off pathogens in the body, while building the immune system. Asian medicine is prescribed for a wide range of different diseases. Astragalus can be taken daily to help boost the immune system or taken on the symptoms of the cold or flu to reduce the duration or symptoms.

While these natural treatments are useful in relieve or prevent the symptoms of cold and flu, don’t take them all at once. More is not necessarily better. Use whichever is best cure fits your symptoms or what is readily available in your area.
