The Link Between Anorexia and Bulimia

Anorexia – Young men and women sometimes starve themselves. No matter how thin they may be-in internal mirror, they are fat. Or they may fear of weight gain, but so severely hungry, eat and eat until they feel guilty so they must vomit all food. These people suffer from eating disorders. Eating disorders have nothing to do with the digestive system of the person. Instead, the disease exists in the mind.

People with anorexia or bulimia, though different behaviour towards food, share many of the same symptoms. Both suffer from malnutrition, and as a result may have dry skin, brittle hair and nails be constipated and may be sensitive to changes in temperature. Women may be irregular periods. People who suffer from eating disorders may develop food rituals such as eating certain foods or only at specific times, and may eat in secret. Even when thin, people with eating disorders of fat and thinking to themselves for fear of gaining weight.

Eating disorder symptoms have each unique, however. People with anorexia lose massive amounts of weight, eating small amounts of food, and excessive exercise. People with bulimia, but have symptoms related to vomiting. Stomach acid to eat away at the enamel on teeth and burns to the esophagus and can lead to swelling of the salivary glands. May be people with bulimia also wounds or bruises on their fingers from the induction of vomiting.

Anorexia and bulimia are treated completely. People who suffer from eating disorders need professional help from doctors and psychiatrists. It may take years to learn how to control the eating disorder. Also needed love and support from friends and family to recover from any eating disorder.
